LECOM optimizes institution through partnership with MedHub UME Consulting

“MedHub is more than a software vendor, I view them as a partner in the success of our Clinical Education program. They truly care about the success of our programs and our students.” – Mark Badaracco, Senior Software Engineer and Database Analyst, LECOM

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) is the largest medical college in the United States and is the only Academic Health Center in the osteopathic profession. Preparing 3,100 students for the challenges of modern medicine is not something LECOM takes lightly. They partner with MedHub to continually optimize their administration and internal processes, stay current on industry standards and accreditation requirements, and ultimately, provide their students with the best education and experience.

Refocusing time from manual processes toward student success and experience

LECOM’s partnership with MedHub began with digitizing paper-based evaluation processes and streamlining data collection and reporting. Not only did this eliminate the need to manually route and track down missing or late evaluations, but with more than 2,000 faculty and staff members at LECOM, implementing the user-friendly software platform finally provided a single source of truth for data collected across the institution.

Through real-time data syncing, Clinical Administrators and Directors at LECOM now had critical visibility into records across all sites, allowing them to proactively identify students that require intervention even before rotations began. In concert with MedHub, Central Administrators were able to regularly monitor LECOM’s ability to maintain compliance to the Commission of Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) standards.

The out-of-the-box and custom-built evaluations also led to assessment efficiencies, with a holistic view of where students are at in their rotation process. Staff and faculty were able to proactively intervene with early remediation plans for students who may have otherwise fallen behind.

“By leaning on MedHub’s industry expertise in administration, technology and institutional operations, LECOM was able to refocus time toward ensuring our students achieve the highest possible learning outcomes and have a best-in-class experience,” said Senior Software Engineer and Database Analyst, Mark Badaracco.

Leveraging industry-leading guidance in the transition to Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME)

The ongoing partnership between LECOM and MedHub is a true testament to MedHub’s commitment to the success of their UME partners, beyond implementation of the MedHub or eValue software platform. When asked about his overall experience working with the consulting team, Badaracco shared, “MedHub is more than a software vendor, I view them as a partner in the success of our Clinical Education program. They truly care about the success of our programs and our students.”

“I’ve found the level of support to be superior to other institutional vendors we’ve used,” said Badaracco. The consulting team maintains a deep understanding of LECOM’s unique needs and goals to build an evolving roadmap for the program’s continued success. “Guidance and support from the team at MedHub has been extremely valuable in helping us through the ongoing challenges we face in the ever-changing landscape of medical education.”

A commitment to LECOM’s long-term success

Ensuring their valued students are ready for residency, is of utmost importance to LECOM. With the integration of CBME and tracking of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) on the horizon, Badaracco looks to MedHub’s Consulting team for support and guidance.

With years of experience as former institutional leaders themselves, the consultants take pride in proactively staying abreast of industry trends to help MedHub clients like LECOM prepare for what’s next in the everchanging field of medical education. In LECOM’s case, UME Consultant, Meggi Lensman, MBA, has collaborated with LECOM senior leaders and technology team members to develop an in-depth understanding of their unique needs.

Together, LECOM and MedHub UME Consultant Lensman evaluated the various options to execute the implementation of EPAs, taking into account the unique structure and administrative burden associated with such a large student cohort and faculty. Throughout discussions, Lensman addressed continued pain points, critical considerations, and provided strategic recommendations to inform next steps for EPA implementation.

Using knowledge of medical education and learned experiences from other Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, the consulting team was able to demonstrate value and educate faculty and staff on emerging market standards. When the time for implementation comes, MedHub’s Medical Education Consultants will create a plan for a stress-free rollout and continue providing ongoing support for Badaracco and the entire LECOM team.
